Zerubbabel led the first group of Israelites back from the Babylonian captivity (Ezra 2:1-2) and constructed the second temple (Ezra 5:2). He is in the direct line of ancestry to Jesus, possibly being a common link to both Joseph (Matt. 1:12) and Mary (Luke 3:27). Because of this the LORD bestowed a special honor upon Zerubbabel in Haggai 2:23:
On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts.”
This prophecy will come to pass on that day. This refers to the time identified in the previous verse as when the LORD will overthrow the thrones and kingdoms of man (Hag. 2:22), and replace them with the throne and kingdom of Jesus (Dan. 2:44). Zerubbabel being made a signet ring means that he will represent a dignitary in much the same way that a flag or standard bearer does. On many levels Zerubbabel already serves as a type pointing to Jesus. Jesus too will reestablish His people in the Promised Land and build a vastly superior temple (Zech. 6:12-13). In the Millennium it will be Zerubbabel’s official role to make people look to and think of Jesus.
